Wagner, Juhl named to INA All-State basketball teams

Conry earns multiple honors as Peru State football senior

 PERU, NEB. -- Peru State College kicker Greg Conry was recognized at the College Foundation’s Alumni Chili Feed on February 20 and also at the football booster club’s annual banquet in January following an outstanding four-year career for the Bobcats. A 2012 Harlan Community High School graduate, Greg is the son of Tom and Lisa Conry, rural Harlan.

Color Run for the Cure is April 16

 HARLAN -- Registration is open until March 24 for the third annual Color Run for the Cure, a 5K run/walk scheduled for Saturday, April 16, at the Harlan Fairgrounds. The Relay for Life team event will start at 10:00 a.m., with check-in opening at 9 o’clock that morning.

Vollstedt selected as Wolves “Fan of the Game”

 DES MOINES -- Janell Vollstedt of Manilla was honored prior to IKM-Manning’s Class 1-A quarterfinal at the Boys State Basketball Tournament as the school’s Iowa High School Athletic Association “Fan of the Game.” Vollstedt, pictured with Brett Nanninga (Associate Director of the IHSAA), received a commemorative game ball and was recognized at center court prior to IKM-Manning’s game.

St. Boniface wins CYO girls basketball title

AREA -- St. Boniface of Westphalia won the 2016 CYO Girls Basketball Tournament championship by defeating Panama in the title game on Sunday, February 28. The St. Boniface girls closed the season with a record of 7-2 with both losses against Panama during the regular season.

Local wrestlers compete at AAU State

 DES MOINES -- Five individuals from the Harlan Community Wrestling Club qualified and competed at the 2016 AAU State Tournament held February 27-28 at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. Sixth-grader Jeremiah Davis was the lone place-winner among the group, placing eighth with a 3-3 record in his division.

 DES MOINES -- IKM-Manning faced a small margin for error in the opening game of the Boys State Basketball Tournament Monday morning. Allow West Hancock an open three-pointer and it was likely going to make it.

Lansing to join father in IHSAA Hall of Fame

 DES MOINES -- Former Harlanite Greg Lansing will join his father, Dave, in the Iowa High School Athletic Association Basketball Hall of Fame Saturday night at Wells Fargo Arena. Greg will be inducted into the players’ wing of the Hall while Dave was honored as a coach in 1999.

State tourney mainstays named to All-State teams

DES MOINES -- The Iowa Newspaper Association announced its 2016 All-State Girls Basketball teams on Tuesday, naming Harlan Community seniors Taylor Frederick and Jordyn Moser to the Class 4-A first team and citing Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton sophomore Sophia Peppers on the Class 1-A second team. A panel of sports writers from across the state selected first, second and third teams for all five classes and also named Makenzie Meyer of Mason City

Christofferson joins IGHSAU Hall of Fame

 DES MOINES -- Former Exira and Iowa State University standout Hallie Christofferson was one of three women inducted into the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union’s Basketball Hall of Fame on Saturday night at Wells Fargo Arena. Due to the demands of playing professional basketball in Greece, Christofferson was unable to attend the Hall of Fame ceremony at halftime of the Class 4-A state title game.

Schaben receives Sportsmanship Award

 DES MOINES -- Ron Schaben of Defiance was Harlan Community’s recipient of the Iowa Farm Bureau Sportsmanship Award at the 2016 Girls State Basketball Tournament held last week at Wells Fargo Arena. Schaben (right) is pictured along with the sportsmanship award recipient from Marion. Also recognized with this honor were Floyd and Gloria Hackwell from Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton. 

Boys state basketball tournament underway

 DES MOINES -- The IKM-Manning boys basketball team played its first state tournament game since 2010 on Monday morning, facing West Hancock in a 10:30 a.m. Class 1-A quarterfinal at Wells Fargo Arena. A victory Monday would put the 7th-ranked, fifth-seeded Wolves (22-2) in Thursday’s 1-A semifinal round vs. top-seeded Danville (24-1) or St.

Langenfeld, Osborns join HCS Booster Club Hall of Fame

 HARLAN -- The Harlan Community Athletic Booster Club Board of Directors inducted three new members into its Hall of Fame this year, honoring Todd Langenfeld and Mitch and Nancy Osborn during a pre-game ceremony on Friday, February 5, at the HCHS gymnasium.
