CLARINDA -- Jon Bieker earned a pair of conference titles and Marcus Klein continued a sensational senior season Thursday night as the Harlan Community boys placed fourth at the Hawkeye Ten Co-Ed Track Meet in Clarinda. Four girls and three boys won multiple individual events on the night, including Bieker’s gold-medal sweep of the shot put and discus.

 AREA -- Qualifiers for the 2016 State Track and Field Championships will be determined Thursday night when Co-Ed State Qualifying Meets are held statewide, starting at 4:00 p.m. The area’s four track schools will compete at four different venues. The Harlan Community girls and boys squads will be part of an eight-team Class 3-A meet at Glenwood.

 REGIONAL -- Monday’s Hawkeye Ten Conference tournaments for boys and girls golf and boys tennis were postponed due to rain and rescheduled for Tuesday at the same time and locations. The boys golf meet is at Glenwood and the girls golf meet is at Fox Run Golf Course in Council Bluffs. The boys tennis tournament is at Red Oak. All three events start at 9:00 a.m. Due to the rescheduling, Harlan Community’s golf triangulars vs.

 HARLAN -- Less than six minutes away from ending a long, frustrating losing streak, the Harlan Community girls soccer team was instead hit by another dose of heartbreak Thursday at Merrill Field. With HCHS leading 2-1, Riverside sophomore Grace Gleaves nailed a perfectly-struck, game-tying goal with 5:28 left in regulation, then assisted Lindsey White’s sudden-death game-winner with 3:49 left in double overtime as the Lady Dawgs (1-8) beat th

 HARLAN -- Miranda Beezley scored a hat trick and Emily Casson and Nicole Hilderbrand added two goals apiece last Monday as Council Bluffs St. Albert shut out the Harlan Community girls soccer team 9-0 at Merrill Field. The 8th-ranked (1-A) Saintes (9-2) scored six goals in the first 28 minutes of play and added three goals in the second half. HCHS lost its eighth straight game to fall to 1-8.

 CARROLL -- Going into a seven-day break without a game, the Harlan Community boys put together 80 minutes of quality soccer Thursday night in a 4-0 non-conference road win over Carroll. HCHS outshot the Tigers 33-9 overall and 24-6 on goal while totaling 11 corner kick opportunities.

 COUNCIL BLUFFS -- Trailing 4-1 with 27:19 left in the match, Harlan Community mounted a late comeback that fell one goal short in a 4-3 boys soccer loss at Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson last Tuesday. HCHS narrowed the gap by scoring twice off Ethan Knudson corner kicks in a span of 66 seconds - first on a header goal by Drayke Eshelman and then on a TJ own goal with 15:13 remaining. The Cyclones were unable to force a tie down the stretch,

 MONDAMIN -- Posting similar point totals while combining for three gold medals and two school records along the way, the Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton boys placed third and the girls took fourth at Monday’s Rolling Valley Conference Co-Ed Track Meet in Mondamin. Spartan junior Emily Copic was one of six competitors to win at least two individual events on the night as she cruised to victory in the 3,000 and later improved her own school record in

 NEOLA -- Sophomores Payton Sporrer of IKM-Manning and Gage Clay of AHSTW both won their two feature events at Tuesday’s Western Iowa Conference Co-Ed Track Meet, joining Logan-Magnolia’s Kylan Straight and Underwood’s Emma Bonnet as this year’s only WIC athletes to earn multiple individual golds on the Tri-Center track. Sporrer dominated the girls 3,000-meter run and later the 1,500, posting winning times of 11:42.49 and 5:16.54, respectively

 ATLANTIC -- Max Langenfeld’s sixth-place medalist round of 75 kept Harlan Community in the hunt, but the Cyclones ended up finishing in the middle of the team pack at Tuesday’s Atlantic Boys Invitational at Nishna Hills Golf Course. Atlantic won the 13-team tourney with a score of 304 and Kuemper Catholic was second with a 309.

 ATLANTIC -- Paige Powers and Amber Gross finished among the top 10 individual medalists Tuesday, leading a shorthanded Harlan Community girls golf team to fifth place out of 11 full squads at the Betty Heflin Invitational. Powers placed seventh with a score of 93 and Gross finished 10th with a 96 at the Atlantic Golf and Country Club, playing consistent golf over 18 holes.

 ATLANTIC -- In a final tune-up for Thursday’s Hawkeye Ten Conference Meet, the Harlan Community boys and girls track teams placed in the top five of Monday’s Atlantic Trojan Co-Ed Relays. Both Cyclone squads placed 15 times overall, with the boys winning four events and adding four second-place efforts to finish fourth out of 10 teams with 91 points.

 DES MOINES -- A week before the Drake Relays, Harlan Community’s Marcus Klein had never before surpassed 21 feet in the long jump.

 DES MOINES -- Jessica Feldman, a 2013 Harlan Community graduate, competed in two events for the University of South Dakota women’s track team at the Drake Relays. Feldman ran a leg of the Coyotes’ seventh-place 4x1600 relay team on Thursday (above) and also led off USD’s distance medley relay on Saturday.  RED OAK -- Harlan Community finished 10th with a limited varsity squad and placed second in the JV standings at Friday’s Red Oak Tiger Relays. With several of their top athletes competing at the Drake Relays, the Cyclones placed in just four varsity events and scored 16 points. They were also limited by the fact that two of their top-scoring events - the shot put and discus, along with the long jump - were cancelled due to wet grounds.
