 HARLAN -- On a warm and windy day for golf, the Harlan Community boys struggled to post any standout scores on their home course and slipped to eighth place in the Hawkeye Ten Conference Tournament held Monday (May 8) at the Harlan Golf and Country Club. HCHS finished 26 strokes behind the H-10 champion Atlantic Trojans, posting a team score of 351 as all six Cyclone golfers placed between 20th and 40th among the 65-player field. Ryan DeMott

 RED OAK -- Playing without their number one golfer in the lineup, the Harlan Community girls scored a 433 and placed eighth in Monday’s Hawkeye Ten Conference Tournament at the Red Oak Country Club. Senior Kristen Ferry led the Cyclones with a round of 98 (52-46) on Red Oak’s hilly 18-hole course, junior Ellen Keast shot a 110 and freshmen Kayla Powers and Haley Manz added rounds of 112 and 113, respectively. HCHS did not have the services of

 HARLAN -- Harlan Community senior Caleb Rasmussen signed a national letter of intent on April 14 to join the men’s basketball program at Briar Cliff University in Sioux City. Caleb is the son of Randy and Carmen Rasmussen, Jacksonville, and plans on majoring in business. Rasmussen is a 10-time letter winner for the Cyclones with three letters in basketball, three in football, three in track and one in tennis.

 HARLAN -- Allowing just one shot on goal while taking 14 of its own, the Harlan Community boys soccer team blanked Carroll 2-0 on Senior Night at Merrill Field last Thursday (May 4). Levi Culp scored the Cyclones’ first goal with 26:26 left in the first half - assisted by Tanner Fink - and Dylan Eshelman scored off a scramble in the box with 23:39 left in the second half.

 REGIONAL -- Qualifiers for Iowa’s 2017 State Track and Field Championships will be determined Thursday night (May 11) when Co-Ed State Qualifying Meets are held statewide at 4:00 p.m. The area’s four track schools will compete at three different venues. The Harlan Community girls and boys squads will be part of an eight-team Class 3-A meet at Denison.

 HARLAN -- The National High School Athletic Coaches Association has announced the upcoming induction of Harlan Community High School football coach Curt Bladt into the NHSACA National Hall of Fame. This year’s induction ceremony for the Class of 2017 will take place on June 20 at the National High School Athletic Coaches Association’s national convention at the Embassy Suites in East Peoria, Illinois.

 RED OAK -- The Harlan Community boys tennis team rode a wave of momentum into postseason action following Thursday’s 8-1 dual win at Red Oak. Coupled with a 7-2 victory at Clarinda one week earlier, the Cyclones finished regular-season play with an overall record of 7-5 and a Hawkeye Ten mark of 5-4. The Cyclones’ only loss to Red Oak (6-5, 4-5 H-10) came in a tiebreaker at No. 1 singles.
